Inspiring high performance
Have you ever been on a team where everything clicked and the entire team was consistently performing at high levels? What causes this phenomenon? Google recently sought to answer this very question. They spent over two years interviewing over 180 teams and testing over 250 different variables. At the end of it, they found only one predictor that was far and away the #1 predictor of team performance. (Hint: it wasn’t individual talent.) In this fast-paced and highly interactive class, you’ll learn what psychological safety is, why it’s a hallmark of high-performing teams, and how to build psychological safety within your own teams. You’ll also have plenty of opportunities role playing with your classmates how to work your way through difficult conversations that will help your team to thrive.
non-verbal communication
Have you ever had a presentation or conversation where you advocated for an important idea—but at the end of it, your audience still wasn’t convinced? Have you ever gone home wondering what you might have said differently—reworking the words in your mind, trying to find the magical combination of words that persuade? But what if it had nothing to do with the words you said? A growing body of research in neuroscience and cognitive psychology has confirmed that it may not be what you said—but your nonverbals in how you said it—that can turn off an audience to your message. For instance, recent research out of Boston College found that the #1 predictor of which investors received funding—and which didn’t—had nothing to do with the credentials of the entrepreneur—nor the quality of their idea—the #1 predictor was whether the entrepreneur exuding comfort and confidence in their nonverbals. In this fast-paced and highly-interactive class, you’ll learn and practice non-verbal communication strategies from the latest research in cognitive science to understand how to spread your ideas more effectively.
Storytelling
Have you ever approached a conversation where you had all the evidence on your side? You were perfectly well-informed, you knew your stuff—and you even had the data to prove it. Have you ever had the experience where even despite your thoroughness, the other person only dug in their heels and resisted you? Data alone may not always be sufficient to provoke change—we'll discuss how storytelling can compel during times of resistance and also how it will make your messages more memorable.
Visual communication
Drawing on visual aids used by startups such as Airbnb, LinkedIn, and Square that were used in actual venture capital pitch decks, we'll discuss the elements of what makes a visual enhance your messaging. We'll also discuss Richard Mayer's multimedia learning theory and laboratory-proven principles to make your visuals memorable.
Cross-cultural communication
In today’s multinational business world with colleagues spanning the globe, we’ll often interact with individuals from around the world who all have very different ways of connecting with one another and doing business. Because of our very diverse backgrounds and upbringings, miscommunications and even hurt feelings can and frequently do get in the way of effective communication across the invisible boundaries of culture. This workshop will help you to understand key aspects that might differ from culture to culture and to be able to approach cross-cultural contexts with understanding and sensitivity to better connect with and influence people from all over the world.
